Palantir and the Forward Deployed Engineer: Where the DeployCo Model Comes From
Palantir Technologies did not use the word DeployCo and predates the category by two decades, but every AI deployment company launched in 2026 is measured against it. Palantir created the forward deployed engineer role - internally the "Delta" - and built a software business around engineers who sit with customers and make the product work in the customer's environment 1. This page describes the Palantir model, why it is the reference point, and what Palantir's 2026 results say about demand for it.
DeployCos.com is an independent reference and is not affiliated with Palantir.
The Delta model
Palantir's engineering blog describes two tracks. "Devs" build the platforms (Gotham, Foundry and their successors). "Deltas" - forward deployed software engineers - deploy those platforms to customers, configure and extend them against real data, and build the custom applications a customer actually needs 1. The "Delta" name is a throwback to Palantir's early days, when each business-development team was named after a NATO alphabet letter 1. The "forward deployed" wording reflects the company's early defense and intelligence customers, where engineers worked alongside users in the field.
Three characteristics of the Palantir model recur in every later DeployCo:
- Engineers, not salespeople, own the customer relationship. Palantir's forward deployed engineers do the demos, the integration and the delivery.
- The platform is the leverage; the deployment is the product. What the customer experiences is the customized implementation, built on a reusable platform.
- Field learning flows back into the product. Patterns found in deployments become platform features, which is also how the OpenAI Deployment Company describes its relationship to OpenAI's products 3.
For the role in general, including compensation and career paths, see Forward Deployed Engineers.
"Only Palantir has FDEs"
As the FDE title spread across the AI industry in 2025 and 2026, Palantir's leadership pushed back on imitations. On the company's Q3 2025 earnings call, as reported by Benzinga, CTO Shyam Sankar said it had "become fashionable" for companies to hire forward deployed engineers but that they did not really understand the role, and that Palantir's "measure of success is not did we sell the software? It's did we solve the problem?" 4. A widely circulated line attributed to Sankar - that only Palantir has FDEs and "everyone else has sparkling sales engineers" - appears in Jaipuria's essay 5; DeployCos.com could not locate it in a transcript and presents it as attributed rather than verified.
Why Palantir is the benchmark
The 2026 DeployCo launches were explicitly framed by press and analysts as borrowing Palantir's playbook, and the people involved often came from Palantir:
- Arnaud Fournier, CTO of the OpenAI Deployment Company, worked at Palantir before co-founding OpenAI's FDE team 6.
- Northslope, which the OpenAI Deployment Company agreed to acquire in July 2026, was founded by former Palantir FDEs 7.
- Distyl AI, an independent horizontal DeployCo, was founded by Palantir alumni Arjun Prakash and Derek Ho 8.
The difference is in what is being deployed. Palantir deploys its own platform; a lab-backed DeployCo deploys its parent's models through a custom harness; an independent deploys whichever model fits. See Types of DeployCos.
What Palantir's 2026 results show
Palantir's Q3 2026 results, filed with the SEC on 11-02-2026, are the clearest public evidence that enterprise demand for embedded AI deployment is large and growing: revenue of $2.313 billion grew 96% year over year, and US commercial revenue of $984 million grew 148% and for the first time exceeded US government revenue of $953 million 2. The company raised full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $8.530 billion to $8.534 billion 2. Palantir does not break out how much of this is attributable to forward deployed engineering versus platform licensing, and this site does not estimate it.
Palantir Q3 2026 revenue by segment
US$ millions, with year-over-year growth.
Palantir versus DeployCos
| Palantir | Lab-backed DeployCos | Independent DeployCos | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is deployed | Palantir's platforms | Parent lab's models via custom harness | Any model via custom harness |
| Business model | Software subscription plus services | Services, with model consumption flowing to the parent | Services |
| Who owns the platform after exit | Palantir | Varies by contract | Usually the customer owns the harness |
| Scale of FDE org | Thousands (company does not disclose) | Hundreds | Tens to low hundreds |
Frequently asked questions
What is a Palantir Delta?
Palantir's internal name for a forward deployed software engineer, the engineer who deploys and extends Palantir's platforms at the customer 1.
Did Palantir invent the forward deployed engineer?
Is Palantir a DeployCo?
It is the template, not a member. It sells its own software platform and does not describe itself with the term.
How big is Palantir's commercial business now?
US commercial revenue was $984 million in Q3 2026, up 148% year over year, and full-year US commercial guidance is more than $3.559 billion 2.
