Definitions
What is a DeployCo?
A DeployCo (deployment company) is an AI services firm that embeds its own engineers inside a customer's business to take AI models and agents from pilot to production, and that takes responsibility for the result. The term is also OpenAI's short name for its own OpenAI Deployment Company. See What Is a DeployCo?.
What does DeployCo stand for?
"Deployment company." It is a contraction in the style of "NewCo" or "HoldCo."
Who coined the term DeployCo?
OpenAI used "DeployCo" as the short name for the OpenAI Deployment Company at its 05-11-2026 launch. Investor Tanay Jaipuria popularized "DeployCos" as a category label in his 10-13-2026 essay "The Rise of DeployCos." See Timeline.
Is DeployCo a company or a category?
Both. There is the OpenAI Deployment Company, the category of AI deployment companies, and an unrelated independent company at deployco.co. This site covers the category and profiles the major entities; it is not affiliated with any of them. See About.
What is a forward deployed engineer?
A software engineer who works inside a customer's organization to build and ship production systems on a vendor's platform or models, and who is measured on whether the problem is solved. The role was created at Palantir. See Forward Deployed Engineers.
What is an agent harness?
The software around a model - retrieval, tools, orchestration, guardrails and logging - that makes it useful in a specific workflow. See the Glossary.
The companies
Who owns the OpenAI Deployment Company?
OpenAI, which describes it as "majority-owned and controlled by OpenAI." It launched with more than $4 billion from 19 firms led by TPG, with Advent, Bain Capital and Brookfield as co-lead founding partners. See OpenAI Deployment Company.
How much is the OpenAI Deployment Company worth?
Axios reported a $14 billion post-money valuation ($10 billion pre-money plus the $4 billion raised). OpenAI's announcement does not state a valuation. See Market and Economics.
Is the 17.5% guaranteed return real?
The Financial Times reported that OpenAI guaranteed its Deployment Company's outside backers a minimum 17.5% annual return over five years. Reuters said it could not independently confirm it, and OpenAI's announcement does not mention it. This site reports it as a reported, unconfirmed term. See OpenAI Deployment Company.
What is Ode with Anthropic?
A standalone enterprise AI services company backed by Anthropic, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and Goldman Sachs (plus General Atlantic, Leonard Green, Apollo, GIC and Sequoia), built on the May 2026 acquisition of Fractional AI and launched under the Ode name on 07-15-2026. Press reports put its capital at $1.5 billion. See Ode with Anthropic.
Is Ode part of Anthropic?
No. It is a separate company in which Anthropic is one of several backers. Its founders describe it as "Claude-first," using rival models where required.
Is Palantir a DeployCo?
Palantir invented the forward deployed engineer and is the model every DeployCo cites, but it sells its own software platform and predates the term. See Palantir.
Does AWS have a DeployCo?
AWS launched a $1 billion Forward Deployed Engineering unit on 06-30-2026, funded internally and led by Francesca Vasquez. It is a unit of AWS rather than a standalone company. See the Company Directory.
Which companies are DeployCos?
Lab-backed: OpenAI Deployment Company, Ode with Anthropic. Independent horizontal: Distyl, Brain Co. and others. Function-specific and vertical: Sierra, Decagon, Tennr, HappyRobot and others. See Types of DeployCos and the Company Directory.
How they work
How does a DeployCo engagement work?
Diagnostic, then a small number of priority workflows, then embedded engineering (agent harness and integrations), production validation (evals, security, approval gates) and operational deployment with monitoring and a learning loop. See How DeployCos Work.
How long does it take?
Diagnostics are measured in weeks; AWS cites a 45-day engagement cycle; multi-workflow programs run quarters. No entity publishes a guaranteed duration.
What does a DeployCo cost?
Pricing is not published. Structures described publicly include a paid diagnostic followed by program fees, and increasingly outcome-tied pricing (AWS). Ask for a production unit cost per task. See Evaluating a DeployCo.
Is a DeployCo the same as a consultancy?
No. A consultancy delivers recommendations; a DeployCo delivers a running system and is accountable for the outcome. Several consultancies have invested in the DeployCos. See DeployCo vs Consulting vs SaaS.
Is a DeployCo the same as a systems integrator?
They overlap. DeployCos claim smaller, more senior embedded teams, no handoff between design and build, and native access to frontier models. SIs claim scale, breadth and vendor neutrality.
Why now
Why did DeployCos appear in 2026?
Because adoption is high and scale is rare: 88% of organizations in McKinsey's 2025 survey use AI somewhere, 7% have scaled it. Models can do far more than typical users ask of them (OpenAI's "capability overhang"). And the labs have their own motives - training signal, lock-in and a larger market. See Why DeployCos Exist.
Why are private equity firms involved?
Their portfolio companies are the first customers, they capture margin gains at exit, and in the reported OpenAI structure they receive a fixed minimum return. See Market and Economics.
Risks
What are the risks of using a DeployCo?
Vendor lock-in through the harness and model, channel conflict when your advisor has an interest in the vendor, unclear IP ownership at exit, and governance gaps in regulated workflows. See Risks and Debates.
How do we avoid lock-in?
Settle in the contract which model goes to production and why, who owns the code, evals, data and weights at exit, and whether a comparative model evaluation will be run early. See Evaluating a DeployCo.
What is agent cannibalization?
The risk that agents deployed into PE-owned services firms automate the billable work those firms sell. See the Glossary.
Careers
How do I become a forward deployed engineer?
Strong general software engineering plus practical LLM skills (retrieval, tools, evals), customer-facing communication and willingness to travel. Palantir, OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS, Google Cloud and many AI startups hire for the role. See Forward Deployed Engineers.
How much do forward deployed engineers earn?
US aggregators report averages from about $116,000 to about $156,000 base, with senior roles at AI companies posting above $200,000; equity at the labs can be a multiple of base.
