Forward Deployed Engineers: The Role Behind Every DeployCo

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside a customer's organization - often physically on site - to build, integrate and ship production systems on top of a vendor's platform or models. The title was created at Palantir, where FDEs are known internally as "Deltas," and it has since been adopted by OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS, Google Cloud and a large number of AI startups 12. FDEs are the operating unit of every DeployCo; without them there is no deployment company. This page covers what the role involves, where it came from, how it differs from neighboring titles, and what it pays.

What a forward deployed engineer does

Across public job descriptions and company statements, the core responsibilities are consistent:

  • Embed with the customer. Sit with frontline operators and domain experts, learn the actual workflow (not the documented one), and get access to the real systems and data.
  • Build production software in the customer's environment. Integrations, agent harnesses, data pipelines, evaluation suites and user-facing tools. The code ships; it is not a prototype handed to someone else.
  • Own the outcome through go-live and beyond. FDEs are measured on whether the problem got solved. Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar put it this way on the company's Q3 2025 earnings call, as reported by Benzinga: "Our measure of success is not did we sell the software? It's did we solve the problem?" 3.
  • Carry lessons back to the product. OpenAI's Arnaud Fournier, who co-founded OpenAI's FDE team and is now CTO of the OpenAI Deployment Company, describes FDEs bringing customer learnings back to product and research teams 4. The OpenAI Deployment Company's site says deployment patterns feed products such as its Agent SDK and model reliability tooling 5.

The role is commonly described as "T-shaped": deep software engineering skill plus enough business fluency to explain return on investment to a chief operating officer or chief financial officer.

Where the role came from: Palantir's Deltas

Palantir named its early business-development teams after NATO alphabet letters. "Delta" became the forward deployed software engineer who deploys Palantir's platforms to customers; "Dev" is the platform engineer who builds the product itself 1. The "forward deployed" wording reflects Palantir's early defense and intelligence customer base, where engineers were literally deployed alongside users. Palantir's engineering blog, in posts such as "Who Wants to be a Delta?" and "Dev versus Delta," describes the split and the trade-offs of each track 16.

By 2025 the title had spread widely enough that Sankar remarked on the earnings call that it had "become fashionable" for companies to hire FDEs, adding that in his view most did not understand the role 3. The 2026 DeployCo launches made the FDE the most visible job title in enterprise AI: OpenAI's Deployment Company was announced with a founding acquisition expected to bring about 150 FDEs and deployment specialists 7, and AWS committed $1 billion to a Forward Deployed Engineering unit 8.

FDE vs sales engineer vs solutions engineer vs consultant

Titles overlap and some employers use them interchangeably, so the duties matter more than the label. The table reflects the distinctions most commonly drawn in practitioner writing 910.

RoleWhen in the customer lifecyclePrimary outputMeasured onWrites production code?
Forward deployed engineerAfter the sale, through go-live and operationWorking system in the customer's environmentWhether the workflow runs and the metric movesYes
Sales engineerBefore the deal closesDemos, proofs of concept, technical answersDeals closed; often commissionedRarely

Management consultantBefore and around implementationStrategy, operating model, recommendationsEngagement delivery, client satisfactionNo
Systems integrator engineerImplementationConfigured and integrated systemsProject milestones, billable utilizationYes, often offshore and after a separate design phase

Constellation Research CEO R "Ray" Wang made the point bluntly at the AWS launch: "I'm tired of looking at fake FDEs," arguing that many self-described FDEs are salespeople or sales engineers rather than people who build product while solving customer problems 8.

Skills and background employers ask for

Common requirements in 2026 postings from labs, hyperscalers and deployment startups:

  • Strong general software engineering (Python and TypeScript are the most common stacks in AI deployment work), plus comfort with APIs, data pipelines and cloud infrastructure.
  • Practical LLM engineering: prompting, retrieval, tool use, agent orchestration and, above all, evaluation design.
  • Customer-facing communication: running discovery, presenting trade-offs, negotiating scope.
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and travel. Many postings specify on-site presence for part of each week.
  • Domain depth is valued but usually secondary to the ability to learn a workflow quickly.

Ode said at launch that more than half of its roughly 100 engineers were former startup founders, which reflects the preference for people who have owned an outcome end to end 11.

What forward deployed engineers earn

Compensation data for the role is noisy because titles vary and equity dominates at the labs. Figures below are from public aggregators and should be read as ranges, not offers.

SourceFigureNotes
Glassdoorabout $156,000 average base, typical range roughly $125,000 to $198,000652 self-reported submissions, US, accessed 11-2026 12
ZipRecruiterabout $116,000 national averageEstimated from postings and third-party data 13
Published job postings (2026)roughly $80,000 to $320,000 baseSenior and staff listings at AI companies cluster above $200,000 14

Two cautions: government-facing roles tend to pay less than commercial ones, and total compensation at frontier labs can be a multiple of base once equity is included. Compare base to base.

Career paths

Typical ladders run from FDE to senior FDE to staff or principal, with branches into engagement leadership (owning a customer portfolio), product (carrying field patterns back into the platform) or founding a deployment firm. Several of the companies in the Company Directory were founded by former Palantir FDEs, including Northslope and Distyl 1516. Fournier's path - Palantir, then startup co-founder, then first FDE at OpenAI, then CTO of its Deployment Company - is the archetype 4.

Why the role matters to buyers

For an engineering leader evaluating a partner, the FDE question is simple: who will actually write and operate the code, where will they sit, and what are they accountable for? A firm that sends strategists and subcontracts the build is selling consulting with a newer label. Questions to ask are in Evaluating a DeployCo.

Frequently asked questions

What does FDE stand for?

Forward deployed engineer. Palantir's full title is forward deployed software engineer (FDSE) 1.

Is a forward deployed engineer a consultant?

No, although the roles overlap. Consultants advise; FDEs build and ship production code in the customer's environment and are measured on whether the system works 9.

Which companies hire forward deployed engineers?

Palantir, OpenAI and the OpenAI Deployment Company, Anthropic and Ode, AWS, Google Cloud, and a large number of AI application and deployment startups. See the Company Directory.

How much does a forward deployed engineer make?

US aggregator averages range from about $116,000 to about $156,000 base, with senior roles at AI companies posting above $200,000 121314.

Do you need to travel?

Often. Many postings require on-site presence with the customer for part of each week, which is the "forward deployed" part of the title.
